As the Feeder Turns...

Feeder Birds

It's been a super busy morning in the back yard! I'm beginning to think I'm the only one in this county feeding the birds. I missed a shot of three woodpeckers on the feeder at the same time. You should have seen it! I tried to sneak out the backdoor to photograph the scene, but they flew away as soon as they heard me.

Winter Blues
Sunday, 25 January 2009 14:04

I have a terrible case of cabin fever.  Will spring ever get here?  I recently joined a gardening forum...as if the cabin fever wasn’t bad enough...add lots of gardening talk and pour more salt in the wound!  I have two gardening notes to add.  Thanks to those on the “Garden Buddies” forum I was finally able to identify a flower that was in my garden.   I also have a friend who wanted to know what it was so this is for you Priscilla!Biden's

The flower is called a Bidens, "Peter's Gold Carpet" and is an annual often used in flowering pots.  You can read more by clicking here.  I must say that this flower quickly won my heart and was the absolute last flower in the garden to bloom.  It survived numerous hard frosts and did not give up until a three-day period of below freezing temperatures.  I will definitely have more next year!

Hawk

This fellow (Assuming it’s a fellow ?) came close to my garden last week.  At least it gave me a little winter excitement but in the end only made me long more for spring and bird watching.  I was going to purchase a new lens for my camera, one that will give me more magnification, but funds ran tight so I’m hoping to get one in the next few months.  The hawk was far away and I got this shot from a window in the house.  Anyway, I hope you enjoy the photo despite its lack of clarity.

They're Back!!!

It took them awhile but they are back with another brood!  Papa bird didn't like me photographing the babies.  I did the best I could with a bird swooping over my head.  Click photos for larger images!

Moonflower Update
Tuesday, 29 July 2008 23:29

A moonflower came up wild at my backdoor.  You have to love those bird droppings.  I would have never planted the flower there because it is now covering up the sidewalk that leads to the grill.  But, given the fact the moonflowers are having a horrible year, there was no way I was going to move it.  I'm so happy that I left it alone.  If you've haven't read my journal, moonflowers are just a wee bit special in this household.  Sadly, this year's crop of moonflowers are absolutely pitiful.  I've had maybe 10 blooms all summer.

I guess God heard me when I told Brian, "I think Kaity has completely left us...not even the moonflowers are blooming," because only a few weeks have passed and it looks like someone has put miracle grow on this plant.  The last several nights have been heavenly.  You walk outside and the aroma is awesome!  I am convinced that when I see Kaity again, her hair will smell just like a moonflower. moonflower July 2008

I've been having a "not so good day."  Not only is her anniversary coming up but my sister told me two days ago that she might be moving to Seattle, Washington.  Everytime I think about her leaving I start to cry. Today I took off to the bathroom and had a good wail.  I know that moving might be good for her and Eddie but the thought is simply breaking my heart.  She and I have never been apart.

I guess my sad mood was sensed and a moonflower bloomed this evening.  It is peeking in my door as I write.  I can look up from my desk and see it perfectly. I think it is Kaity letting me know she is still here.

This year's crop of moonflowers are no higher than 12 inches and hardly any blooms, but this "out of place plant" is at least 4 feet in diameter.  It has the biggest trunk I've ever seen on a moonflower plant.

Click the photo above and you can see how close the flower is to my backdoor. After smelling the flowers so close to the house I've decided to move all my beds closer next year. Hopefully temperatures next spring will bring them back (they are supposed to be annuals in this area but they are slowly learning to adapt).  I've really missed the moonflowers this year, but one beautiful flower during a dreary time makes up for the lack thereof.

Laughing UPDATE!!!  This morning Becca told me she wasn't moving until Levi is out of school (another 3 years)...if at all.  *Insert jumping, high fives, and all other moving emotions of happiness*

UPDATED 8/8/08  Becca took this photo this morning since I'm traveling.  There were 15 blooms last night.  It's almost over the sidewalk!  She thinks there will only be 4 blooms tonight.  Maybe she will check tomorrow night too.  If she does I'll let everyone know.

Still No Moonflowers
Friday, 04 July 2008 20:10

Still no moonflowers. Cry I check them everyday but only little buds and short, stubby plants. I did snap this photo yesterday. It is a hummingbird perched in a nearby tree. It's not really clear but he was so far away.
